High Blood Glucose / Type 2 Diabetes
High blood glucose levels put you at greater risk of developing insulin resistance, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Untreated diabetes can lead to many serious medical problems including heart disease and stroke. If you’re overweight AND you have at least one additional cardiovascular risk factor, your healthcare provider may recommend a blood glucose test. The American Diabetes Association recommends regular screening for diabetes risk at age 45, with repeated tests at least every 3 years.
Know Your Heart Disease Risk Factors
You may have an increased chance of developing heart disease if you are over age 35 and have even one of these risk factors:
- Family history of cardiovascular disease
- Shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, light-headedness, dizziness or loss of consciousness
- Previous heart attack or stroke
- Heart murmur diagnosis
- Alcohol dependence
- High blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
- Sleep apnea
- Chronic lung condition
- Smoking habit
- Excess weight
