Cardiovascular Disease

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is better known as heart disease. It’s the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Addressing cardiovascular disease within our community is at the root of what we do at Baton Rouge Cardiology Center. Our cardiologists are specially trained and skilled at diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

Hardening and narrowing of the heart’s arteries over time prevent blood from flowing properly, which can cause chest pain and, eventually, heart attack.

Other common conditions and disorders associated with heart disease include:

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Stroke

Risk factors for heart disease include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Chronic diseases such as diabetes
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise and physical activity
  • Excessive use of alcohol

Heart Risk Factor Calculator

The Heart Risk Calculator developed by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association can be used by individuals before a heart event happens to estimate how likely you are to have a heart attack or stroke in the future.

Visit www.cvriskcalculator.com to get started.

Please note that risk calculators are a great way to predict cardiovascular risk and help guide your plan for prevention but they do not replace the opinion of your doctor.

You will work closely with your doctor to develop an individualized treatment plan that may include such procedures as bypass surgery or stenting. Medications and changes to your diet and physical activity routine also may be incorporated to give you the best chance at returning to an active lifestyle.
